Belonging to the Community of Faith

What does it mean to truly belong? This message takes us deep into one of the most dramatic moments in Jesus's ministry -- the clearing of the temple -- and reveals that his anger was not random or impulsive. It was the fierce, protective anger of someone who loved people enough to fight for them. By listening carefully to the ancient echoes woven into Matthew 21, we discover that Jesus was invoking a sweeping prophetic vision from Isaiah 56, a vision of a house of prayer where the traumatized and the othered -- symbolized by eunuchs and foreigners -- are not merely tolerated but fully welcomed, memorialized, and given something better than sons and daughters. This is not a peripheral concern for Jesus. It sits at the very heart of what the community of faith is meant to be. As we explore this text together, we are invited to ask ourselves: are we building that kind of community, or have we, perhaps without realizing it, become the religious regime that uses the name of God as a refuge while quietly othering those on the margins?
