Vision Sunday

Romans 12 serves as a spiritual anchor in turbulent times, calling us to resist the invisible currents that pull us away from God's purposes. Just as ocean tides can unexpectedly sweep us into dangerous waters, the unseen forces of our culture constantly work to drift us from our assignment. This passage challenges us to refuse conformity to 'the present age'—a world characterized by rebellion against God—and instead live as citizens of the age to come, already inaugurated through Jesus. The transformation begins not with external rule-following, but with the renewing of our minds, enabling us to discern God's good and perfect will. We're invited to offer our whole selves as 'living sacrifices,' a beautiful contradiction where death to self-centered living produces abundant new life. The remainder of the chapter reads like a manifesto for counter-cultural community: sincere love, devotion to one another, honoring others above ourselves, practicing hospitality, blessing enemies, and overcoming evil with good. These aren't mere suggestions but anchoring truths that keep us from being squeezed into the world's mold. As we face an uncertain year ahead, this passage reminds us that genuine Christian maturity requires us to think deeply, act intentionally, and remain flexible to the Holy Spirit's work—becoming wineskins ready to receive the new wine God wants to pour into our communities.
